Tau11 – My Journey of Lifelong Learning

This is a living archive of my thoughts, experiences, and hard-earned insights, drawn from an unusual life. Here you’ll find reflections on the food I’ve eaten, the things I’ve bought, the people I’ve encountered, the places I’ve seen, the books I’ve read, the quotes I’ve kept, and the trends I’ve spotted and capitalized on.

I write this for you, my children, those already here and those yet to come. Daddy loves you more than words can hold. I want each of you to live lives you’re proud of. This is my thinking, in my own voice, left here for you to explore. I hope one day it proves useful.

If, by some unlikely chance, I’m gone before I can guide you in person, let this stand as a poor substitute. But in the more likely case that I’m still here, let this serve as an intellectual archive, a record that I held these convictions long before you were born. May that give weight to my words, and credibility to the wisdom I hope to pass on to you.

Angel and Demons / Da Vince Code / Inferno – Dan Brown

All questions were once spiritual. Since the beginning of time, spirituality and religion have been called on to fill in the gaps that science did not understand.

Religion has always persecuted science.

Having faith requires leaps of faith, cerebral acceptance of miracles-immaculate conceptions and divine interventions. And then there are the codes of conduct. The Bible, the Koran, Buddhist scripture… they all carry similar requirements and similar penalties. They claim that if I Don’t live by a specific code I will go to hell, I can’t imagine a God who would rule that way.

Terrorism is not an expression of rage. Terrorism is a political weapon. Remove a government’s façade of infallibility, and you remove its people’s faith.

Faith does not protect you. Medicine and airbags… those are things that protect you. God does not protect you. Intelligence protects you. Put your faith in something with tangible results. How long has it been since someone walked on water? Modern miracles belong to science… Computers, vaccines, space stations…

Did you really believe quarks and mesons inspire the average human being? Or that equations can replace someone’s need for faith in the divine?

We all benefit from a sense of contact with divinity… even if it is only imagined.

The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of crisis

I realize that you find my ideas distasteful, but I can assure you that you will find the alternative far less tasteful when it arrives.

The human mind has a primitive ego defense mechanism that negates all realities that produce too much stress for the brain to handle. It is called denial.

Every epic collapse can be traced back to a single moment, a change meeting, a bad decision, an indiscreet glance.

Humans have evolved incrementally over millennia, inventing new technologies along the way – rubbing sticks together for warmth, developing agriculture to feed ourselves, inventing vaccines to fight disease, and now, creating genetic tools to help engineer out own bodies so we can survive in a changing world. Genetic engineering is just another step in a long line of human advances. If we Don’t embrace these advances then we are as undeserving of life as the cavemen who freeze to death because he is afraid to start a fire.
